We're looking to create a label for our product when the ord_status of a Shop Floor order changes from Started ('S') to Ended ('E').

The first part is monitoring for the change:
We have Event Manager, but can it actively monitor the ord_status column of sfordfil_sql for real-time changes?

If not, can it do it on a interval, say every 5 minutes?

The second part is printing the label:
I've printed Crystal Reports from Event Manager before to a shared printer and if the first part can be done with Event Manager I will try to do this again.

Thanks for any thoughts on how to do this!

You can set your query to run every five minutes or whatever frequency that you wish, but it must be a timed value. We have found it easy to send an e-mail to a person with a Crystal Report attached. I do not believe we have ever successfully had a Crystal Report go directly to a printer.

The Synergizer that Exact created (as a product add-on) will provide the functionality that you require. This is what I would recommend if you wish to go directly to a printer.

Alternatively, if you wish to keep your costs down, we had found a inexpensive package (http://www.watchdirectory.net/) that would monitor a file directory and send any pdf documents directly to a printer. Save your Crystal Report as a PDF and let this program handle the printing.

It's worth noting also that if you absolutely need real-time alerts about conditions like this one, you can configure Event Manager to make use of SQL (database) Triggers. There's some helpful information -- as well as samples -- in the Vineyardsoft on-line knowledgebase at:

Thanks for the posts and I'm very happy to see that the folks at Vineyardsoft are looking in.

I tried to use an Event Manager technique documented here, but I wasn't able to get it to fire off on real-time events.

So at this time I'm not using EM for my solution, but the use of a trigger, SQL job and a VB app with Crystal embedded:

Trigger
  • looks for real-time change to ord_status = 'E' in sfordfil_sql
  • INSERTS ord_no, item_no, ord_qty etc into temp table
  • Calls SQL Agent Job - (I originally tried to call the EXE here, but had to use a job instead so that the trigger would finish and not keep the row in sfordfil_sql locked)
SQL Agent Job
  • Calls VB exe
VB exe
  • Looks for row in temp table
  • Sends parameters to Crystal Report and prints to shared printer
  • Delete row in temp table

This is pretty convoluted, but I'm close to having all the pieces tied together and then we'll buy the label printer.
