Can anyone enlighten me as to how to remark in a Request to a "Role".
There does not seem to be any facility for this, but I think it is a logical request

It is not possible to remark to a role, but you can always remark to several people. Just open the request and click on the remark button and select a resource, then press the remark button again and select another resource (keep adding unlimited resources this way). The remark and "role" functionality are different because the role is used to pass to a group where one person will assume it (and the others can ignore it) while remarking to a group is indended on each of them reading it and all of them adding their notes.

If you have a defined process that requires going to a role then it might be better to design a specific workflow for the process that has a step mapped to a role than to try to have a generic workflow that requires a user to remark it to several people.

Yes it is possible. You will just need to modify the workflow configuration, select the document field and change the edit option from Current to Everyone. You can still control which stages of the workflow (Open, Approved, etc.) this field can be editted, but at those stages everyone (including "remarkees") can attach a document.

It's important to realize that when you remark someone on a request, it puts the request in their workflow and gives them a chance to make "remarks". HOWEVER, as soon as you take the next action (usually "realize" or "process") it removes the request from their workflow and they will no longer have the chance to remark.
You may want to check the log and make sure the people you have remarked have looked at the request before taking the next action.

Note also that you can keep your workflow tidy while waiting for remarkees to respond by going to your workflow then clicking the Customize button and enabling the field "Exclude: Remarks" then click Save.

If you flag "Exclude: Remarks" ON, any workflow that you have asked others to remark on will not be visible in your workflow until the remarkee adds their comments and clicks "Done", at which time the request will be visible in your workflow again.
